Each lecture is available in two separate formats: as a "Producer" file and as a "Breeze" file. The Producer lectures have video along with the powerpoint slides, but the Breeze lectures only have the audio. The Breeze lectures, of course, are viewable with a lower-speed connection. Both file formats have an outline for each lecture (which is just the titles of the powerpoint slides) and allow you to jump to any slide in the lecture. You may, however, occasionally experience problems with the synchronization between the audio/video and the slides if you jump from slide to slide (at least in the Producer lectures). If you think the items showing up on the slide are behind the video you can try clicking in the powerpoint frame with your mouse - the slide should advance one element for each click.

For the Producer lectures that give you a choice, we recommend selecting the 300Kbps setting. The quality is just as good as the 800Kbps and they run more smoothly. All of the lectures are also available as pdf files so that you can follow along and take notes as you listen.

If you experience technical difficulties with any of these lectures, please email Professor Spencer at spencer@ece.ucdavis.edu.

Lecture Description
1 43 minutes: Covers basic op amp operation, negative feedback & virtual short circuit, gain circuits, frequency-dependent circuits (LPFs and HPFs used as differentiators and integrators), offsets, slew rate and full-power bandwidth.

Slides in pdf format.
Producer lecture (with video)
Breeze lecture (audio only)

2 36 minutes: Covers power conditioning, DC-to-DC conversion, switching regulators and linear regulators.

Slides in pdf format.
Producer lecture (with video)
Breeze lecture (audio only)

3 50 minutes: Covers pulse-width modulation (PWM), a comparator with hysteresis, relaxation oscillators, the 555 timer, review of basic electromagnetics, magnetic sensing, DC motor operation & modeling.

Slides in pdf format.
Producer lecture (with video)
Breeze lecture (audio only)

4 42 minutes: Covers DC motor speed control and track sensing.

Slides in pdf format.
Producer lecture (with video)
Breeze lecture (audio only)

5 48 minutes: Covers negative feedback as a control loop, stability (including loop gain and phase, Nyquist plots and gain and phase margins), step responses, root-locus plots.

Slides in pdf format.
Producer lecture (with video)
Breeze lecture (audio only)

6 53 minutes: Covers proportional, integral and derivative (PID) controllers, a kinematic model of the car, simulated response, and compensation of the steering control loop.

I have removed this lecture because the material changed significantly. You can get the slides used for the 2008 lecture from the schedule page.

7 40 minutes: Covers microprocessor-based considerations, Adapt9S12E128 processor board overview, digital I/O on the Adapt9S12E128, A-to-D conversion on the Adapt9S12E128.

Slides in pdf format.
Lecture not available in Producer yet
Breeze lecture (audio only)

8 40 minutes: Covers configuring the clocks on the Adapt9S12E128 and an overview of interrupts on the Adapt9S12E128.

Slides in pdf format.
Lecture not available in Producer yet
Breeze lecture (audio only)

9 Not used.
10 71 minutes: Covers reliability and manufacturability; causes of system failure and design for reliability (DFR) procedures.

NOTE: The video of the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse does work in the Breeze presentation, it does not in the Producer presentation.

Slides in pdf format. Note: these were modified slightly in 2007, as was this lecture, so these notes are the newer ones.
Reliability handout in pdf format.
Producer lecture (with video)
Breeze lecture (audio only)

11 41 minutes: Covers practical design and construction information, testing, debugging, safety, cost, task scheduling and report writing.

Slides in pdf format.
Producer lecture (with video)
Breeze lecture (audio only)
