EEC173B/ECS152C, Winter 2006: Project Ideas
You are welcome to define your own project topic, as long as they fall
into the scope of wireless/mobile networking and explore one or more
of the basic principles as discussed in the Project Overview. The
following are some suggestions and basic building blocks you could
leverage, but you are *not* limited to developing your project based
on PlaceLab or Opportunistic Communications framework.
- Opportunistic Communications: Heterogeneous forms of wireless
connectivity is available to mobile users today through
infrastructure-based Internet access (e.g., Wifi, WiMax, cellular) as
well as local peer-to-peer connections.
Potential topics for your project/term paper:
- What type of novel
applications can be supported using these opportunistic
communications?
- What kind of new architecture and protocols are needed
to deal with this environment where continuous end-to-end connection
cannot be guaranteed (e.g., frequent disconnectivity due to user
mobility)?
Example projects (in both industry and academia) exploring
these concepts include:
- Privacy-Observant Location
System (PlaceLab) :
Through Placelab software, hardware clients such as notebooks, pocket PCs, or
cell phones can be programmed to "locate" their geographical positions
by listening for radio beacons such as 802.11 access points, GSM cell
phone towers, and fixed Bluetooth devices. Students are encouraged to
design novel location-aware applications that make use of the ability
to detect their locations as well as the locations of peers.
