• ECS30 or 35; Pass 1: Restricted to Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering majors

• Goodman and Miller, A Programmer's View of Computer Architecture, Oxford.

Overview

This course provides an introduction to computer architecture and assembly language programming. It covers how higher level programs are translated into machine language, the general structure of computers, the number systems, data representation, arithmetic and logical operations, data structures, procedures, and related topics.

Grading

Important Dates

• Midterm: Monday, Oct 26, 2009 (in class)
• Final: Thursday, Dec 10, 2009, 3:30-5:30pm

Labotatory

Students can work in groups of two. You will be assigned a programming project approximately every 10 days. Typically that would be an assembly programming exercise using the SPIMSAL simulator. The simulator is available on the workstations in the ECE department. You can access the simulator via ssh from home.

There will be several TA supervised lab sessions every week, which will also serve as the TA office hours.
